What is Lung Cancer?

A type of cancer that begins in the cells of the lungs. It is one of the most common types of cancer and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. The two main types of lung cancers are non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC), which are classified based on the appearance of the cancer cells.

Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC): Adenocarcinoma- This is the most common type of NSCLC and often occurs in the outer regions of the lung. It is more common in in-smokers and women. Squamous cell carcinoma- This type usually arises in the bronchi lining and is often linked to a history of smoking. Large cell carcinoma- This is a less common type and can appear in any part of the lung. It tends to grow and spread quickly.

Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC): This type is less common than NSCLC and is often associated with heavy smoking. It tends to grow and spread rapidly, making it more challenging to treat.

Symptoms

The symptoms of lung cancer can vary, but common signs include persistent cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, and recurrent respiratory infections.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis often involves imaging tests such as X-rays or CT scans, as well as biopsy procedures to examine tissue samples. Treatment options depend on the type and stage of the cancer but may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy.
